Ground Plane Banding

Any idea why the ground plane has gradient banding when in GPU mode? It looks perfectly fine in CPU mode.

That looks odd, try to see if the scale of your scene is correct. You can have weird issues if for example the scene is 1000x too small.

Not really any other idea yet or maybe two ground planes active which causes z-fighting but looks a bit too regular for z-fighting.

I have checked the scale of the scene and it is life size.

There is definitely only one ground plane.

The issue seems to go away when I add Occlusion to the Shadow input of the Ground.

what is the material of the ground? it looks like it could be a gradient that is being repeated. Is this only when rendered or is this in the live view as well?

It’s the default Ground Plane with nothing else added. The banding appears in both the live view and renders, but only in GPU mode.

When you have a ground plane and occluded shadows activated, then (it may sounds wierd) turn off the ground shadows in the environment

This does remove the banding but the shadow becomes flat and unrealistic.

Not really a solution but I rarely put products on the ground although I think it can have some advantages if you want to render out a separate shadow. If there are still issues I would just create a plane a meter up and use that as base for the model.

Was also wondering what version of KS you used since I think the banding problem might be a bug. If I can reproduce I can create some scene and the developers can fix it. Of course you can open a support ticket as well.

Then use the shadow of the ground plane without the occlusion shadow option in the environment settings.
What does Reddit said to solve the problem?

Only one comment on Reddit. It said to shrink the ground plane but it didn’t work. I think i’ll just stick to adding Occlusion to the Shadow input of the Ground for now.

The ground plane material does vary in functionality between GPU and CPU. The material was updated a few versions back, but the CPU mode retained some legacy values to retain appearance consistency for older scenes.

Have you tried looking at it in different modes, Product vs Interior?

While I haven’t seen your exact issue (co-planer z-fighting?); I have seen artifacts in the ground material.

When using the ground plane; I’ll always go into the environment tab and turn off shadows and reflections and scale the ground size to 0.01, the lowest possible value, you must type it in. Then in the Lighting Settings, Disable Ground Illumination,
